Commonly Used Alloy Steel Materials for Machining

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is one of the most widely used materials in machining due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness. It contains primarily carbon and iron, with minimal amounts of other alloying elements.

Types and Applications:

  • Q345 (16Mn): Low-alloy high-strength structural steel, used in bridges, buildings, vehicles, and pressure vessels.
  • 45# Steel: Medium carbon steel, suitable for manufacturing shafts, gears, connecting rods, and other mechanical parts after heat treatment.

Alloy Steel

Alloy steel contains additional elements such as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and nickel, which enhance its mechanical properties, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Types and Applications:

  • 40Cr: Low-alloy steel with good comprehensive mechanical properties, used for manufacturing gears, shafts, and crankshafts.
  • 65Mn: Spring steel with high tensile strength, used for manufacturing various springs and elastic elements.
  • 12Cr1MoV: High-temperature alloy steel, suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments such as boiler pipes and pressure vessels.

Stainless Steel for Machining

Stainless steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance and is widely used in harsh environments.

Types and Applications:

  • 304 Stainless Steel: The most common stainless steel, containing chromium and nickel, used in chemical, food, and medical equipment.
  • 316 Stainless Steel: Contains molybdenum, providing better corrosion resistance than 304, especially in marine environments.

Heat-Resistant Alloy Steel

Heat-resistant alloy steel can maintain good mechanical properties and chemical stability at high temperatures.

Types and Applications:

  • 15CrMo, 15CrMoG: Used in high-temperature and high-pressure environments such as boiler pipes and heat exchangers.

High-Strength Alloy Steel

High-strength alloy steel is designed to withstand heavy loads and wear.

Types and Applications:

  • 42CrMo: High-strength alloy structural steel, used for manufacturing heavy-duty mechanical parts such as gears and shafts.
