Understanding ISO 2768 Tolerance Standard: A Comprehensive Guide

In manufacturing and engineering, precision is paramount. Every component, from the smallest screw to the most intricate machinery, needs to adhere to specific dimensions to ensure proper functionality and compatibility. This is where tolerance standards come into play, defining acceptable variations in size and shape for manufactured parts. One such widely used standard is ISO 2768.

What is ISO 2768?

ISO 2768 is an international standard for general tolerances on linear and angular dimensions without individual tolerance indications. It provides a framework for defining permissible variations in size and shape for mechanical parts and assemblies. The standard is applicable to a wide range of manufacturing processes, including machining, casting, forging, and molding.

Classification of ISO 2768 Tolerances

ISO 2768 is divided into several classes, each indicating a different level of tolerance precision. Let’s explore these classes in detail:

ISO 2768-1

ISO 2768-1 is the most commonly used part of the standard and provides general tolerances for linear dimensions. It applies to dimensions in millimeters, ranging from 0.5 mm to 1500 mm. The tolerance grades specified in ISO 2768-1 are divided into four categories:

  2. Medium (M): Suitable for general engineering applications where moderate accuracy is sufficient. This grade provides a balance between precision and cost-effectiveness.
  3. Coarse (C): Suitable for rough engineering applications where functional fit is more critical than dimensional precision. This grade offers the widest tolerances.
  4. Very Coarse (V): Reserved for applications where rough machining or fabrication is acceptable, and tight tolerances are not necessary.

Each category within ISO 2768-1 specifies the maximum allowable tolerance for linear dimensions based on the size of the dimension.

ISO 2768-2

ISO 2768-2 complements ISO 2768-1 by providing general tolerances for angular dimensions. It covers tolerances for angles in degrees, minutes, and seconds. Like ISO 2768-1, ISO 2768-2 specifies tolerance grades ranging from fine to very coarse.

The tolerance grades in ISO 2768-2 are defined based on the size of the angle and are divided into the same four categories: fine, medium, coarse, and very coarse.
